Heat Pumps on a Cold Central Florida Night

What to know

A heat pump behaves differently from a furnace. Knowing what is normal makes it easier to spot a real heating problem.

Central Florida heat pumps may go months without a serious heating call. The first cold night is often when stuck controls, failed heat strips, or deferred maintenance finally become obvious.

Warm air from a heat pump can feel less intense than furnace air, so temperature alone is not always the best clue. Watch whether the home is gaining heat, whether the outdoor unit operates, and whether the thermostat reports auxiliary heat for long periods.

If the temperature keeps falling or the system will not change modes, call and describe what both the thermostat and outdoor equipment are doing. That information helps separate a control problem from an equipment problem.
